We Helped to Brighten Up The World Leaders Summit – with Polystyrene

In 2014 Brisbane was the proud host of the G20 World Leader’s Summit. Polystyrene Products was approached with a unique commission request. A large “Brisbane” sign needed to be constructed to specific measurements and weights. We are no strangers to unique custom commissions, and we relished the opportunity to be of service to our beautiful city on such a momentous international occasion.

A Big Task

The brief was to create a 2400mm high BRISBANE sign using EPS. Once we had crafted the sign it needed to be fitted on the back of a semi-trailer in order to be sent to a variety of different locations. It was then to be wrapped in canvas and have the front and rear faces covered in plywood. The next step was for the Brisbane sign to be painted a deep purple, smothered in funky graphic designs and covered with a clear coat of varnish. Despite all of this treatment, however  – as it was not to be a permanent feature of the city – the sign had to be recyclable and environmentally friendly on all levels of production and decoration. Lucky for us, we are specialist polystyrene suppliers and the sign was completely recyclable with minimal impact on the environment.

The EPS that we constructed the sign from also had to be lightweight enough to be safely and easily erected yet durable and robust enough to last over 4 months. We were able to design and manufacture to high Australian standards a product that easily fit these requirements. It was more than fitting for the job.

Upon completion, the sign was visible and eye-catching for most of the attendees of the G20 World Leaders Summit who were present for their various functions, seminars and talks.  As a result, it had the opportunity to be broadcast around the world while the summit was underway, highlighting Brisbane as the honoured host for this event.

We Helped Our Client Beat the Clock

A few months ago Polystyrene Products was approached by a client who needed us to create a niche product for them – something that could join two large waste water pipes together, sort of like a manhole pit. Our client was working on very short time constraints and a strict budget so the supply of our product in a timely manner ensured the project’s success.

As soon as we received their custom order we got to work immediately. We drafted, designed, constructed and then delivered to our client a pit form that they were able to cast in concrete. They then subsequently removed the expanded polystyrene (EPS). At this point however, the job was only partially completed, and the clock was still ticking.

Polystyrene – The Perfect Choice for A Difficult Job

These custom orders are often from industrial construction heavyweights, film and television set designers and civic institutions looking for something eye-catching and different. Often these orders need to be designed and manufactured to adhere to specific time constraints and we always deliver on time, earning our clients gratitude.

A Light Solution for A Large Problem

For one such project, we were tasked with supplying our client with a “void area” to help reduce the amount of weight in a multi-level concrete pour. A very large rainwater collection tank was then to be placed inside. A lightweight yet durable product was required, and expanded polystyrene (EPS) was an ideal choice. The completed weight of the EPS void came to just 98kgs, a very light and easy to handle weight for such a large area.

A Unique Request

One of our long-term and loyal clients very recently approached us with a unique commission request. They required a very large expanded polystyrene (EPS) sign. It was to be the vital centrepiece for a “celebration of colour”, a large part of their 20^th year celebrations and a draw card for locals and tourists alike. The promotion had already been underway for three or so weeks and we were called in to design, manufacture and deliver the Brisbane Colour Sign, and the client was in a hurry.

Each letter of the sign had to be exactly 1800 millimetres high and precisely 300 millimetres thick, but the catch was that each letter had to be able to support its own weight and be self-standing – this meant without the use of any struts, braces or supports. The icing on the cake of this challenge was that the surface needed to be able to be painted in a myriad of colours, as every week the sign was to be painted a different colour as part of their ongoing celebrations.
